  Introduction

  Maxim Jakubowski

Is there any evidence of a seven-year itch? Or should we even be mentioning itches when it comes to a collection of sexual stories? I just ask as this is already the seventh volume of the Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica. How time flies.

Technically speaking, it’s actually the twelfth volume, as the initial five collections I assembled came with individual titles (in succession, The Mammoth Book of Erotica, International Erotica, New Erotica, Historical Erotica and Short Historical Novels) before we moved to a common title and settled on a successful formula whereby I hunted down the best stories published in print and online during the preceding twelve calendar months. And I’m not even including the two individual volumes of erotic photography, which also fit into the series.

A lot of flesh, much lust, an abundance of emotions and epiphanies and thril
ls galore! You’d think that by now I would be bored at the prospect of swimming in those erotic seas all over again. On the contrary, the experience proves each new year to be as invigorating and provocative as ever. Good writers with an assured feel for this much-maligned genre somehow always manage to renew their inspiration and come up with stories which shed new lights and perspectives on the dangerous currents of sexuality in all its forms, and as a bystander and an editor I get caught up all over again.

Many of my (and your) favourite authors make welcome appearances in this new volume, together with new names. These wonderful tales of sex, sweat, lust and desire unbound originate from all over the world, and from publications cast wide and far. The past year has proven a particularly fertile one for original anthologies, and I counted over 20 whilst prospecting for this book, but magazines on the Internet and also of a more literary nature (and not specifically erotic) also yielded some fascinating tales.

  Savour slowly.

The Dire Consequences of My Libido

  Claude

I first learned about the dire consequences of my libido when I was twelve years old and I fell in love with my sister’s stuffed rabbit. His name was Claude, but let me get one thing out in the open about our situation. He was the one who began our romance when he kept staring at my bare legs from the shelf on the wall during the night.

At first, our relationship was only a friendship. I told him all my secrets, even the deep dark ones that I never told anyone else, and he told me how lonely he was sitting up there on the shelf all the time. It was tragic really. We were two lost souls looking for something missing in our lives.

A few months later, my parents kept wondering why Claude was going bald. My father thought it was moths. My mother thought my sister was giving him haircuts with cuticle scissors because she wanted to become a hair stylist one day.

The mystery was solved one night when I was caught dry humping him in my bed when I thought everyone was asleep. Of course, there was a lot of crying and screaming, and of course, no one would listen to me about how much I loved him and how much he loved me in return.

The following day, my parents took Claude into the backyard where they burned him in a pile of autumn leaves. As my sister shed tears for the loss of her toy, they comforted her and ignored my tragic wailing. They didn’t understand they were killing my best friend.
